Department of Teaching and Research (DER)

Research Training Through Research
The primary mission of the Department of Teaching and Research (DER) in Mathematics at ENS Paris-Saclay is to provide excellent preparation for careers in research and teaching in mathematics and its related fields.

To this end, students in the Mathematics Program at ENS Paris-Saclay are introduced, from their first year onward, to researchers and faculty members—whether through coursework, the “Panorama de la Recherche” seminar, or during the first introductory internship in mathematical research, which takes place on-site at the Borelli Center on a part-time basis starting at the beginning of the second semester.

This immersion intensifies the following year with a three-and-a-half-month internship in a research laboratory (public or private) in France or abroad, which allows second-year students to gain an insider’s view of research activities.
The curriculum is designed to introduce students to mathematics as it relates to contemporary scientific challenges, building on a solid and in-depth foundation in research-based learning.

The partnership with the Orsay Faculty of Sciences during the first year of the program (L3), and with the École Polytechnique and the Orsay Faculty of Sciences during the second year (M1 Hadamard at the ENS campus), enables the department to offer courses across the entire spectrum of mathematics. Students in the department are also encouraged throughout their time at the school to explore and engage with a broad spectrum of mathematics, ranging from the most applied to the most fundamental.

The department’s small size allows for close, individualized attention to students, and curricula are developed in consultation with the department’s faculty members.

In their third and fourth years, students complete a second year of their master’s program—not necessarily at the ENS or Paris-Saclay University—followed by a specialized year.

The specialized year is customizable: it can be a year at the interfaces, a year leading to a specific ENS degree (ARIA, ARRC, ARTeQ, AReCO, etc.), a full year of study dedicated to work in an academic research laboratory abroad (ARPE Year), or even a year of preparation for the mathematics agrégation exam.

The vast majority of the department’s graduates continue their studies by pursuing a doctoral thesis to pursue careers in academic or industrial research in France or abroad (see the page dedicated to the career paths of Mathematics Department alumni after graduating from the School)

The existence of a highly ambitious preparation program for the mathematics agrégation as part of the Master’s in Higher Education Teaching also opens up career opportunities in preparatory classes. However, the agrégation preparation program is open to all. Admission is based on application materials.
